Don Rex (speed frame) armchairs

SOLD: Don Rex (speed frame) armchairs

What a pair. These man sized chairs by Don Rex are something just a little bit different, and after a full restore they are looking fab.

I will definitely be raising a little glass of wine to these two this evening.  Now that they are finally done I love to be able to just relax and enjoy the lines; & what lines!

Wednesday 30th May

The Don Rex pair are finished and looking fab. The original spring frame has been reattached to both and the new 75mm Dunlop foam squabs arrived.  In the end I went for a deep chocolate brown ribbed fabric to contrast strongly against the honey and blond tones of the wood frames.

They have been given a little pop of colour with a pair of throw cushions covered in a floral vintage design fabric.   I just love the ridiculous curve of the front leg that almost makes the chair look unstable.  This is accentuated by the downward curve of the wide comfortable armrests.  It's no wonder they are called the 'Speed Frame' The chairs have a lovely deep seat and tall back.

Sunday 27th May

The Don Rex chair frames are both gleaming again, and the new foam should arrive tomorrow. It was a bit of a slow weekend with other things going on, so these will probably be listed some time mid week.   I've been thinking about fabric choices.. but haven't made my selection yet.  That's a job for tomorrow.

Friday 25th May

I spent a wonderful morning out and about in Auckland meeting like-minded souls that love vintage furniture which made coming back to the workshop on a Friday afternoon to sanding a double edged sword.

Luckily I was working on a great pair of Don Rex (speed frame) lounge chairs.

Don Rex, a Brisbane based designer and manufacturer from the 60's & 70's produced some beautiful pieces.  He is well know for using quality Australian hard woods his designs.  Many of his pieces, although obviously inspired by other makers of the day show a real 'point of view' on the designs of the era.

The 'speed frame' name is certainly deserved as these look like they are doing 90kph standing still.  There are certain elements to the frame design that reminds me of my Fler SC55's.  These DRs are getting the full treatment, removing the old clouded coatings, all new foam and fabric.  These should be coming up this week.
